About LENA: News Outlets Team Up to Keep Readers Informed on Breaking News

ITC Global helps LENA streamline logistics and tap into the expertise of professional translators, connecting Europeans with critical foreign news.

In a complex global economy rife with political uncertainty, information is currency. Accessing that information from trusted sources in your native language is essential. That’s where journalists and media outlets step in, exploring the issues, teasing out hidden details, and helping companies and individuals make sense of current events and trends that impact local and global markets.

The Leading European Newspaper Alliance, or LENA for short, is at the forefront of that work. This collective of leading newspapers “exchange[s] content, expertise, and innovative approaches, advancing journalism through [a] collaborative approach,” ensuring that readers in six countries can engage with timely, trustworthy reporting on events that influence their future. As people increasingly move to digital sources for their news, these media outlets are also keeping pace with the shift by sharing technology and publishing strategies.

The Challenge: Connecting Europeans with Critical Foreign News

With the 2016 U.S. presidential elections poised to become a defining moment for global policy, LENA faced a challenge: how to cover the presidential race for millions of readers from six European countries in five languages.

These readers needed to access news about U.S. politics in their language because the outcome of the election would directly shape issues like climate policy, NATO funding, and economic stability in their own lives.

Participating LENA newspapers:

  • El PaĂs in Spain
  • Le Figaro in France
  • Le Soir in Belgium
  • Tribune de Genève, SonntagsZeitung, and Tages-Anzeiger in Switzerland
  • la Repubblica in Italy
  • Die Welt in Germany

The ITC Solution: Streamlining Logistics and Tapping into the Expertise of Professional Translators

LENA journalists needed an easy way to submit articles for translation so they could focus on interviewing sources and reporting in a fast-paced environment affected by rapidly changing dynamics.

Each journalist filed a daily story in their language—French, German, Spanish, and Italian—and it was then translated into the other three languages, as well as into English within 24 hours.

To make sure each publication’s articles conveyed essential information in a way that resonated with local readers, ITC Global assigned professional translators with deep knowledge of the source and target cultures. This added perspective combined with their native language skills meant each translation sounded like it was written in the target language and used the right tone. The result? Facts were conveyed in a style that truly connected with readers.

To accomplish this, ITC Global created a custom process so journalists could concentrate on what they did best.

  • Each newspaper had a secure, dedicated account on our client portal to upload articles
  • Articles were instantly routed to trusted native translators
  • A flat-rate fee system and automated workflows eliminated delays
  • Two designated project managers in Europe and North America provided nearly round-the-clock support
  • Within 24 hours, articles were in the hands of editors

The Impact: Keeping Millions of Print and Digital Readers Updated

In autumn 2016, journalists from LENA member publications filed nearly 200 stories on topics ranging from a debate watching party with women in the southern U.S. state of North Carolina to the aftermath of a

The impact of potential U.S. policy shifts on issues such as the 2015 Paris climate accord and funding for NATO meant that this U.S. election was closely followed by governments, companies, and the public throughout Europe. By providing coverage in the language of their readers, LENA’s members helped Europeans to anticipate and debate global policy shifts that would affect their daily lives.

By working with ITC Global, LENA’s member publications found a localization partner that enabled them to bring strategic information to their readers and position themselves as media leaders dedicated to accessible, global journalism.
